Before You Start — What is ITR?
An Income Tax Return (ITR) is a form you submit to the Income Tax Department declaring your income, deductions, and tax paid during the financial year. Even if your employer deducts TDS, you still need to file a return if your gross income exceeds the basic exemption limit.
✅ Filing ITR has benefits beyond compliance: It serves as proof of income for visa applications, home loans, credit cards, and government tenders.
Which ITR Form Should You Use?
| Form | Who Should Use It |
|---|---|
| ITR-1 (Sahaj) | Salaried individuals with income up to ₹50 lakh. One house property, no business income. |
| ITR-2 | Individuals/HUF with capital gains, more than one property, or foreign assets. |
| ITR-3 | Individuals with income from business or profession. |
| ITR-4 (Sugam) | Freelancers and small business owners opting for presumptive taxation. |
Most salaried individuals use ITR-1. If you have stocks or mutual fund gains, use ITR-2.

Step-by-Step ITR Filing Process
01 Register / Login on the IT Portal
Visit incometax.gov.in and log in using your PAN number. First-time users need to register — it takes 5 minutes.
💡 Use your PAN as your User ID
02 Download Form 26AS and AIS
Go to e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Form 26AS. Also download the AIS from the portal. Cross-check TDS credits with your Form 16.
💡 Any mismatch here can cause a tax notice
03 Select Assessment Year and ITR Form
Click e-File → File Income Tax Return. Select AY 2025–26 (for FY 2024–25 income). Choose the correct ITR form — ITR-1 for most salaried people.
04 Choose Filing Mode — Online (Recommended)
Select Online mode. The portal will pre-fill most of your data from Form 16 and AIS. Review every field carefully — don’t just accept what’s pre-filled.
✅ Pre-filling saves 80% of the work
05 Fill Personal Info and Income Details
Verify your name, PAN, Aadhaar, address, and bank account details. Then enter your salary income (from Form 16), other income sources, and deductions.

- Enter HRA exemption if applicable
- Enter home loan interest (24b)
- Enter health insurance (80D)

07 Pay Any Remaining Tax
If your total tax payable is more than TDS deducted, pay the difference as Self-Assessment Tax (Challan 280) before submitting the return. If TDS is more than payable, you’ll get a refund.
08 Preview, Submit and E-Verify
Preview your return once more, then click Submit. You must e-verify within 30 days — otherwise the return is invalid.
How to E-Verify Your ITR
E-verification is mandatory. You have multiple options:
- Aadhaar OTP — Fastest; Aadhaar must be linked to your mobile number
- Net Banking — Login through your bank’s net banking portal
- Demat Account — If you have a demat account with CDSL/NSDL
- Bank ATM — Generate EVC from your ATM
- Physical ITR-V — Print, sign, and send to CPC Bengaluru (not recommended)
✅ Aadhaar OTP is the easiest. It takes 30 seconds and completes your filing instantly.
