The PM-KISAN scheme (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi) gives eligible landholding farmer families ₹6,000 a year, paid in three installments of ₹2,000 each, directly into their Aadhaar-linked bank account. The 23rd installment was released on 20 June 2026, transferring over ₹18,880 crore to more than 9.44 crore farmers — including 2.18 crore women farmers. The next one — the 24th — is expected in the August–November 2026 cycle, likely around October–November. If you haven’t received your payment yet, the most common reason is incomplete eKYC — check that first.

What Is PM-KISAN — Explained the Way a Farmer Actually Needs It

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is a central government scheme launched on 24 February 2019 that puts money directly into the bank accounts of landholding farmer families — no middleman, no paperwork trip to a bank branch, no waiting for a cheque. With the release of the 23rd installment, the government has transferred over ₹4.46 lakh crore through this scheme since inception, making it one of the largest direct benefit transfer programmes anywhere in the world.

Here’s the part that actually matters to you: PM-KISAN is a Central Sector Scheme, meaning 100% of the money comes from the Government of India — not your state government. So even if your state runs its own farmer support scheme (several do), you can usually claim both, as long as you meet each scheme’s eligibility separately.

I think of it the way a lot of farmers I’ve spoken to describe it: it’s not going to change your life on its own, but ₹2,000 landing in your account right before sowing season — when you’re buying seeds, urea, or paying for a tractor rental — makes a real difference to cash flow at exactly the moment you need it.

Over 9.44 crore farmers received the 23rd installment, totalling more than ₹18,880 crore transferred nationwide. If your bank account hasn’t shown the credit yet, don’t assume it’s been skipped — check your status directly (steps below) before worrying. Payment processing sometimes takes a few extra working days to reflect even after the official release date.

Government advisory worth knowing: the department has flagged certain accounts for physical verification — mainly cases where land was acquired after 1 February 2019, or where more than one family member (say, both husband and wife, or an adult child alongside a parent) is receiving the benefit. If your payment is on hold, this is one of the more likely reasons — check your status on the official Know Your Status (KYS) page for the specific flag on your account.

Who Is Eligible for PM-KISAN

The rule is broader than most people assume — there’s no upper limit on land size. A farmer with half an acre and a farmer with 20 acres both qualify, as long as neither falls into an excluded category.

CategoryEligible?Notes
Small & marginal farmers✅ YesAny landholding size
Large farmers (5+ acres)✅ YesNo land ceiling
Tenant farmers / sharecroppers❌ NoLand must be in your or your family’s name
Income taxpayers (either spouse, last assessment year)❌ NoDisqualified regardless of farm income
Government employees (current or retired)❌ NoExcept Multi Tasking Staff / Group D / Class IV
Constitutional post holders (MP, MLA, etc.)❌ NoPast or present
Professionals (doctors, engineers, lawyers, CAs)❌ NoIf practising, registered with a professional body
Pensioners drawing ₹10,000+/month❌ NoExcept Group D/MTS category pensioners

A Real Example — How the Numbers Actually Work

Ram Bahadur, a paddy farmer near Lucknow with 3.5 acres in his name, registered for PM-KISAN in April 2019 — right when the scheme opened up. His eKYC has been done since 2021, and his Aadhaar has stayed linked to the same bank account the whole time. By the time the 23rd installment landed in June 2026, he’d received 23 installments without a single miss — ₹46,000 total since 2019. His case is a good template for what “doing it right” looks like: land registered before the cutoff, eKYC done early, no changes to bank details that could break the Aadhaar link.

Compare that to a case I’ve heard described often on farmer forums: a family where the son took a government clerical job two years ago. If that son is still listed as a co-holder on the family’s land records, the entire family’s payment can get flagged and held — not because the farming stopped, but because one family member now falls into an excluded category. This is a detail that trips up otherwise fully eligible families constantly, and it’s worth checking your own land record listing if a payment suddenly stops.

The Rule That Catches People Off Guard: Land Bought After 1 February 2019

This is one of the most commonly misunderstood rules in the entire scheme. If you purchased agricultural land after 1 February 2019, that specific land does not qualify you for PM-KISAN — no matter how much of it you own or how long you’ve been farming it. Land you inherited, were gifted, or already owned before that date is fine. Land received through inheritance after that date is also allowed — it’s specifically fresh purchases that are excluded, to prevent people from buying small plots just to claim the benefit.

New for 2026 — Farmer ID Is Now Mandatory in 14 States

Since 2026, a unique Farmer ID is required for new registrations in at least 14 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. This ID is digitally linked to your land records under the AgriStack / Digital Agriculture Mission, and is gradually replacing the older manual submission process.

How to get your Farmer ID: visit your state’s agriculture portal or the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC). Carry your Aadhaar card, land ownership documents (patta or khasra), and a bank passbook. It typically takes 2–7 working days to issue. Once you have it, use it to register on pmkisan.gov.in under “New Farmer Registration.”

How to Check Your PM-KISAN Status Online

  1. Go to the official portal: pmkisan.gov.in — never use a third-party site for status checks; they can show fake results or misuse your Aadhaar number.
  2. Click “Farmers Corner” → “Beneficiary Status.”
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number, registered mobile number, or account number, then click “Get Data.”
  4. Read the status carefully:
    • Payment Success — the amount has been credited.
    • FTO Generated / Sent to Bank — processing, allow 2–5 working days.
    • Pending for Approval — still under verification.
    • Rejected — check your details or call the helpline immediately.

Common Reasons a Payment Doesn’t Arrive

  • Incomplete eKYC — by far the most common cause. Even a fully eligible farmer’s payment gets automatically held if eKYC isn’t done.
  • Aadhaar not linked to the bank account — payments only go to Aadhaar-seeded accounts.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar and land records — even a spelling difference can trigger a hold.
  • Land purchased after 1 February 2019 — as covered above.
  • A family member falling into an excluded category — government job, pension above ₹10,000/month, or a professional licence, even if it’s not you personally.

If your status shows “Rejected” or stays “Pending” for more than 30 days, call the helpline: 155261 or 1800-115-526 (toll-free).

How to Register as a New Farmer

New registrations take roughly 45–90 days to verify, so if you’re not registered yet, applying now means you could realistically catch the 24th or 25th installment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The 23rd installment was released on 20 June 2026, from Tarakeswar, Hooghly, West Bengal, transferring over ₹18,880 crore to more than 9.44 crore farmers, including 2.18 crore women farmers.

Around October–November 2026, following the usual Aug–Nov disbursal cycle. An exact date is announced closer to release.

The most common reason is incomplete eKYC. Other frequent causes: Aadhaar not linked to your bank account, a name mismatch between Aadhaar and land records, or land purchased after 1 February 2019.

No. The scheme has no upper land ceiling — small, marginal, and large farmers are all eligible, provided none of the exclusion categories (government employment, income tax payer, professional, pensioner above ₹10,000/month, constitutional post holder) apply.

No. For PM-KISAN, “family” is defined as husband, wife, and minor children together — the benefit is per family, not per individual, so only one payment is made per eligible family unit.

As of 2026, Farmer ID is mandatory for new registrations in at least 14 states. Existing beneficiaries should check their state agriculture portal, since several states are moving toward requiring it for continued disbursal too.

That specific land does not qualify you for PM-KISAN benefits. Land owned, inherited, or gifted before that date remains eligible; land inherited after the date is also allowed.

A Note on Accuracy

This guide is updated as of July 2026, cross-checked against the official PM-KISAN portal (pmkisan.gov.in), PIB press releases, and the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare’s public disbursal data.
