What is GST and How Does This Calculator Help?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India’s unified indirect tax system that replaced more than 17 central and state levies including VAT, Service Tax, and Central Excise. Introduced on 1 July 2017, GST follows a dual structure: the Centre and the State both levy tax on every transaction, which are then divided as CGST (Central GST), SGST (State GST), or IGST (Integrated GST) for interstate supply.
This GST calculator helps you instantly find the tax amount, the pre-tax base price, and the final payable amount — in both Add GST and Remove GST (reverse calculation) modes. It is updated with the GST 2.0 reformed slabs effective 22 September 2025.
How to Calculate GST — Formula Explained
There are two types of GST calculations you will need depending on whether the price you have is exclusive (before tax) or inclusive (after tax):
// ADD GST (price is before tax)
GST Amount = Original Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)
Total Price = Original Price + GST Amount// REMOVE GST (price is already inclusive of tax)
Original Price = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)
GST Amount = Inclusive Price − Original Price// CGST and SGST for intra-state supply
CGST = GST Amount ÷ 2
SGST = GST Amount ÷ 2// IGST for inter-state supply
IGST = Full GST AmountGST Rate Slabs 2025 — Post GST 2.0 Reform
The GST Council’s 56th meeting resulted in the sweeping GST 2.0 reform, consolidating India’s tax structure into three main rate slabs. Here is the complete breakdown with examples:
| GST Slab | Category | Examples | Change from Old Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0% (Exempt) | Essential | Fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, eggs, bread, cereals, unprocessed grains | No change |
| 5% (Merit) | Everyday | Packaged food, medicines, hair oil, toothpaste, soap, footwear, EVs, health insurance, garments ≤₹1000 | Moved from 12% (garments, processed food) |
| 3% | Precious Metals | Gold, silver, diamonds, gemstones, jewellery | No change |
| 18% (Standard) | Standard | Electronics (TVs, ACs, fridges), cement, paints, restaurant services, telecom, banking, vehicles (commercial) | Moved from 28% (commercial vehicles) |
| 40% (Luxury/Sin) | Luxury | Premium cars, aerated beverages, luxury goods — replaces old 28% + cess for most items | New slab introduced Sept 22, 2025 |
Worked Example — GST Calculation Step by Step
Let’s say you are a freelance designer in Mumbai invoicing a client in Delhi for ₹50,000 (exclusive of GST) for a branding project — an interstate supply, so IGST applies.
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Base Service Value | Given | ₹50,000 |
| Applicable GST Rate | Design services → 18% | 18% |
| IGST Amount | ₹50,000 × 18 ÷ 100 | ₹9,000 |
| Total Invoice Value | ₹50,000 + ₹9,000 | ₹59,000 |
| IGST breakdown | Goes entirely to Centre for interstate | ₹9,000 IGST |
If this were an intra-state supply (both parties in Maharashtra), IGST would split into CGST ₹4,500 + SGST ₹4,500.
IGST vs CGST vs SGST — When Does Each Apply?
The type of GST component that appears on your invoice depends entirely on where the supplier and buyer are located:
| Supply Type | Tax Component | Revenue Goes To |
|---|---|---|
| Intra-state (same state) | CGST + SGST (50:50 split) | Centre + State equally |
| Inter-state (different states) | IGST (full rate) | Centre (then settled with states) |
| Imports | IGST + Customs Duty | Centre |
| Exports | Zero-rated (0%) | Refund eligible |
| SEZ Supply | Zero-rated | Refund eligible |
How to Remove GST from an Inclusive Price
This is the most common confusion. If a shopkeeper quotes ₹11,800 for a product “inclusive of 18% GST”, here is how you find the original price and tax:
// Removing 18% GST from ₹11,800
Original Price = ₹11,800 ÷ (1 + 18 ÷ 100)
= ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18
= ₹10,000GST Amount = ₹11,800 − ₹10,000
= ₹1,800// Verify: ₹10,000 × 18% = ₹1,800 ✓Quick Tips for GST Compliance
These apply to every registered taxpayer in India, regardless of business size:
The GST registration threshold is ₹40 lakh annual turnover for goods suppliers (₹20 lakh for special category states) and ₹20 lakh for service providers (₹10 lakh for special category states). Businesses below this can voluntarily register to avail Input Tax Credit.
