How Age Is Calculated — Complete Guide for Indian Users
How Exact Age Is Calculated (Years, Months, Days)
Your age is calculated by finding the difference between your date of birth and the current date (or any chosen date) in years, months, and days. The calculation is not as simple as subtracting years — months and days must be handled carefully, especially when the birth day or month is greater than today’s day or month.
For example, if you were born on 15 August 1990 and today is 10 June 2025:
- Years: 2025 − 1990 = 35, but June 10 has not yet reached August 15, so it becomes 34 years
- Months: Count from Aug 1990 to June 2025 minus complete years
- Days: Remaining days from the last complete month
Why Exact Age Matters in India
In India, age verification is crucial for dozens of official processes. Government forms, school admissions, competitive exam eligibility, senior citizen benefits — all require your age to be verified precisely. Even a single day’s difference can affect eligibility.
| Purpose | Age Required | Document Needed |
|---|---|---|
| UPSC Civil Services | 21–32 years (general) | 10th Marksheet / Aadhaar |
| SSC CGL | 18–32 years | Birth Certificate / Aadhaar |
| School Admission (Class 1) | 6 years as on 1 April | Birth Certificate |
| Atal Pension Yojana | 18–40 years | Aadhaar / Bank Account |
| Senior Citizen Tax Benefits | 60+ years | Aadhaar / PAN |
| MY Bharat Portal (Meri Pehchaan) | 15–29 years | Aadhaar / Any Govt. ID |
How to Calculate Age Manually
Here is the step-by-step manual method used across Indian government offices:
- Write down: Date of Birth (DD/MM/YYYY) and Today’s Date (DD/MM/YYYY)
- Subtract the years: Today’s Year − Birth Year
- Check if this year’s birthday has already passed. If not, subtract 1 from years
- Count remaining months from last birthday month to today’s month
- Count remaining days from last birthday day to today’s day
Worked Example: Ramesh Kumar, born 20 November 1995. Today: 10 June 2025.
- Years: 2025 − 1995 = 30. But November 20 has not come yet in 2025 → 29 years
- From Nov 20, 2024 to June 10, 2025: Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May = 6 months, then 10 days into June → but 10 < 20, so 5 months + remaining days
- Days from May 20 to June 10 = 21 days → 29 years, 6 months, 20 days
Age Rounding Rules in Indian Government Documents
Indian government offices follow a strict rule: age is always counted as completed years — not rounded up. If you are 17 years and 11 months old, your age for official purposes is 17, not 18. This is critical for competitive exams, where even one day matters for eligibility.

5 Tips for Using Age Calculators Correctly
Always enter your DOB exactly as it appears in your Aadhaar card — not as per your memory.
Use the “Calculate as on date” feature to check eligibility for exams with a specific cut-off date.
For school admissions, always check the state government’s age rule — cut-off date varies by state.
If your Aadhaar shows the year only (not exact date), use 1 January as your birth date for calculations.
Save a screenshot of your age calculation result as proof when applying online — some portals require it.
