For example, someone born on 15 August 1990 is 35 years, 11 months, 1 day old as of 16 July 2026. Use the age calculator above to get your own exact age instantly, down to the day — the same method used for UPSC, SSC, Aadhaar, and school admission eligibility across India.

What Is an Age Calculator — and Why “Age in Completed Years” Trips Up So Many People

An age calculator (आयु कैलकुलेटर) sounds simple — everyone knows their birthday. But ask someone their exact age in years, months, and days, and most people freeze. That’s because Indian government forms don’t want “I’m 24” — they want “23 years, 8 months, 14 days as on the date of application.” This one-word difference between rounded age and completed age has cost thousands of candidates their eligibility in exams they were otherwise qualified for.

I’ve seen this play out with my own cousin. She applied for a state-level clerical exam convinced she had two more years before the age limit hit. She’d counted her age by “current year minus birth year” — the way most of us do casually. The actual cut-off, calculated on completed years as on 1 January of the exam year, put her four months over the limit. She wasn’t ineligible because she was too old. She was ineligible because she miscounted by rounding instead of calculating properly. That’s the entire reason this tool exists.

How Exact Age Is Calculated (Years, Months, Days)

The calculation isn’t a straight subtraction. You can’t just do 2026 − 1990 and call it done, because your birth month and day matter just as much as your birth year. Here’s the method, the same one Indian government systems use:

Subtract the birth year from the current year.

Check whether this year’s birthday has already happened. If it hasn’t, subtract 1 from that year count.

Count the completed months since the last birthday.

Count the remaining days since the last completed month.

Quick formula: Age = Current Date − Date of Birth. If today’s day-of-month is smaller than your birth day-of-month, borrow one month and add that month’s days to your day count. This borrowing step is exactly where most manual calculations go wrong.

Worked Example — Ramesh Kumar, Born 20 November 1995

Let’s say today is 16 July 2026 and Ramesh wants to check his eligibility for a government exam with today’s date as the cut-off.

Years: 2026 − 1995 = 31. But 20 November hasn’t arrived yet in 2026, so his birthday for this year hasn’t happened — subtract 1 → 30 years.

Months: From 20 November 2025 (his last birthday) to 16 July 2026 is 7 completed months (Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun) — but 16 is less than 20, so only 7 full months have passed, not 8 → 7 months.

Days: From 20 June 2026 to 16 July 2026 = borrow rule applies; counting back from 20 June, he’s short by 4 days, so we take the days remaining in June (30 − 20 = 10) plus 16 days into July = 26 days.

Ramesh’s exact age: 30 years, 7 months, 26 days. Not “30” and not “31” — the precision matters when an eligibility cut-off is written in the notification down to the exact date.

Why Exact Age Matters in India — More Than Just Curiosity

In most countries, “how old are you” is a casual question. In India, it’s a gatekeeping number. Age verification decides whether you can sit for an exam, get admitted to Class 1, claim a pension, or open a bank account for your child. Government offices are strict about this — and unforgiving of a single day’s miscalculation.

Purpose

Age Required

Document Needed

UPSC Civil Services

21–32 years (General)

10th Marksheet / Aadhaar

SSC CGL

18–32 years

Birth Certificate / Aadhaar

School Admission (Class 1)

6 years as on 1 April

Birth Certificate

Atal Pension Yojana

18–40 years

Aadhaar / Bank Account

Senior Citizen Tax Benefits

60+ years

Aadhaar / PAN

MY Bharat Portal (मेरी पहचान)

15–29 years

Aadhaar / Any Govt. ID

Notice the school admission row — “6 years as on 1 April” is a real example of why the cut-off date field on this calculator matters as much as your birth date. A child born on 2 April misses the cut-off by a single day in most states and has to wait an entire additional year to start school. Parents find this out the hard way every admission season.

How to Calculate Age Manually — Step by Step

Even with a calculator sitting right above this section, it’s worth knowing how to do this by hand — mainly because it helps you sanity-check the result, and because government office clerks and exam scrutiny committees sometimes still do it on paper.

Write down your Date of Birth (DD/MM/YYYY) and today’s date (or the exam/admission cut-off date) in the same format.

Subtract the years: Today’s Year − Birth Year.

Check if this year’s birthday has already passed on the reference date. If not, subtract 1 from your year count.

Count the remaining completed months from your last birthday month to the reference month.

Count the remaining days from your last birthday day to the reference day.

Second Worked Example — Priya Sharma, Applying for a School Teacher Post

Priya was born on 5 March 1994. The recruitment notification’s cut-off date for age calculation is 1 January 2026 — a common practice where the reference date isn’t “today” but a fixed date printed in the notification. This is a detail people miss constantly: always use the cut-off date mentioned in your specific notification, not the day you happen to be filling the form.

2026 − 1994 = 32 years. Her birthday (5 March) hadn’t occurred yet as on 1 January 2026, so subtract 1 → 31 years, 9 months, 27 days as on the cut-off date. If the post’s upper age limit was 32 years, she qualified — but only just, and only because she checked against the correct reference date instead of the day she was filling the form, three weeks later.

Age Rounding Rules in Indian Government Documents

Indian government offices go by one strict rule: age is counted in completed years, never rounded up. If you are 17 years and 11 months old, your official age is 17 — not 18, no matter how close you are. This single rule is responsible for more rejected applications than almost any other technicality in Indian government recruitment.

Aadhaar Note: If your date of birth in Aadhaar is incorrect, every age-based calculation you do — for exams, banking, or scheme eligibility — inherits that error. Correct your Aadhaar DOB at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or online via UIDAI before relying on any age calculation for an official submission.

Age-Based Eligibility Across Major Indian Schemes and Exams

Scheme / Exam

Min Age

Max Age

Category

UPSC Civil Services

21

32 (Gen), 35 (OBC), 37 (SC/ST)

Exam Eligibility

PM Awas Yojana (Urban)

18

No limit

Housing Scheme

MY Bharat Portal

15

29

Youth Scheme

Atal Pension Yojana

18

40

Pension Scheme

PM Jan Dhan Yojana

10

No limit

Banking

Senior Citizen Benefits

60

No limit

Tax / Rail / Travel

SSC CHSL

18

27 (General)

Exam Eligibility

NDA (National Defence Academy)

16.5

19.5

Defence Exam

The NDA row is a good example of how narrow these windows really are — a candidate has roughly a three-year eligibility band, and it’s measured to the half-year. Miss it by even a few weeks on either side, and there’s no appeal process that overturns a date of birth mismatch.

Common Mistakes People Make When Calculating Age

Rounding up instead of counting completed years: “Almost 30” is not 30 on a government form.

Using today’s date instead of the notification’s cut-off date: exam and scheme eligibility is almost always calculated as on a specific fixed date, not the day you apply.

Ignoring leap years: if your birthday is 29 February, most Indian government systems treat 28 February as your birthday in non-leap years for eligibility calculations — check the specific notification if this applies to you.

Trusting memory over Aadhaar: your official DOB is whatever is on your Aadhaar/birth certificate, even if your family has always celebrated a different date.

Forgetting category-based age relaxation: OBC, SC/ST, PwD, and ex-servicemen candidates often get 3–10 years of relaxation on the upper age limit — don’t assume you’re over the limit without checking your category’s specific rule.

5 Tips for Using Age Calculators Correctly

Always enter your DOB exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card — not as per family memory or an old school certificate that might differ.

Use the “calculate as on date” feature to check eligibility against the exact cut-off date mentioned in your exam or scheme notification, not today’s date.

For school admissions, check your state’s specific age rule — the cut-off date for Class 1 admission varies by state (1 April in some, 31 March or even 30 September in others).

If your Aadhaar shows only the birth year (common for older documents), most government systems default to 1 January as the calculation date — confirm this with the relevant department before applying.

Save a screenshot of your age calculation result when applying online — some portals ask you to justify your entered age, and having your own calculation as backup helps if there’s ever a discrepancy query.

<div For example, someone born 15 August 1990 is 35 years, 11 months, 1 day old as of 16 July 2026.

Q2: Does Indian government age calculation round up or down?

Always down.
